I've been Featured on ShootProof!

A few months ago a few people from Shoot Proof (they advertise themselves as: Professional sales tools and stunning client galleries for photographers for those that have never heard of them), they had Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS) in their message and I know that Shoot Proof sponsors all of the galleries I upload for each session I volunteer.  Turns out they wanted to ask me a series of questions to potentially be featured in a blog post.  I said sure, and answered their questions.  So much time has gone by, I have forgotten about it... until today, when they emailed me the links.  Turns out it's a three part series and I'm featured in part 2.

You guys, it's so well composed and written - I love it so much.  I realize it's not super personal like the other two parts are, but that's just kind of who I am as a person.  Most of the time, I do my best to stay objective - and because of this I'm pretty laid back and non-judgmental.heh  I hope the reader gets an insight as to what it's like for me when I'm on a NILMDTS photo session.  There's some tangible simple things I have to constantly remind myself to do and it helps so much.  You can read more about it here   <3

More than all of this though - being drawn to something is such a strong thing.  If you find these stories have touched you and you're feeling moved to do something about it - perhaps channel those energies.  If you're willing and able to volunteer your services it would be greatly appreciated.  You don't even have to be a photographer!  I know, here in Cincinnati, we're looking for a dispatcher at the moment.  When nurses call in to the 800 number, this person is responsible for fielding the call and gathering some information then posting to the group - asking if someone is available.  All I'm saying is: we'd love to have you on our team.  ...and if you have any questions, concerns, or just want to sit down and talk - I'm here, and I'd love to have coffee some time.

Why I'm an affiliated photographer with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

Because my children are healthy.
Because sometimes I think it’s not fair.
Because I understand the importance of remembering
And acknowledging those feelings are there.
I can’t always help with words or cards,
But I can help with my gift of art
I can help with my eye for photography
So, I do.

The mission of Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep (NILMDTS) is to provide remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with a free gift of professional portraiture.

NOTE: This hits home and tough for me to share...the paragraphs below, my experiences, they happened three years ago, so I've had time to process things, a lot.  I'm here for my best friend still, and support her daily the best I can.  This isn't an easy topic to talk about, but I think it's important.

My best friend and I were pregnant at the same time, due in October.  Only she gave birth at the hospital in July, and didn’t leave until April the next year when he passed away at 9 months old.  Meanwhile, another friend of our family was due in September and had her daughter, stillborn, in May.  Their grievance, their timeline of survival, I was a bystander through it all.  I was left in a very awkward position because my baby was healthy.

This past spring I received a random email from a member of my camera club saying “Cheryl Haggard, the founder of Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, will be in Cincinnati on Monday”.  I had never heard of her or the company, and was strongly compelled to do some research.  So I did, and went to the in-person meeting a few days later.  I picked up some literature and information, applied to be a volunteer photographer, and here I am.

After going to a handful of sessions, I’m happy I decided to walk this path with the other volunteers.  It’s sometimes hard to stop my routine, especially with two small kids, and decide to take a session, but I decide to have a few hours of stillness in my body and mind and to be present with the baby and family while I’m there.  I think it’s important they know I’m honored to be a part of their child’s life, I’m grateful to have met them and photograph them.  I will remember their child, and I was impacted by them.  <3
